Best Practices - Child ID Kit for Parents/Guardians

Every parent of a young child needs this. It is a checklist of things you need to do and have ready in the case the unthinkable happens and your child goes missing. It describes how to take proper pictures, what else should be kept ready, and how to create an emergency information kit. In PDF format, you can read it or print it. For more information, visit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at http://www.missin...om/childidand we have placed the two documents on our site as well in both English and Spanish (ENG/ESP) for your convenience.

THIS IS THE ENGLISH VERSION.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR CHILD IS MISSING:

*If your child is missing from home, search » closets » piles of laundry » in and under beds » inside large appliances » vehicles—including trunks » and anywhere else that a child may crawl or hide.

*IMMEDIATELY call your local law-enforcement agency and provide them with your up-to-date Child ID Kit. If you don't have one, call them anyway!

After you have reported your child missing to law enforcement, call the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® at 1-800-THE-LOST® (1-800-843-5678).

If your computer is equipped with a microphone and speakers, you may talk to one of our Hotline operators via www.missingkids.org online. The NCMEC works with other agencies to find your child.

My personal advice: STAY OFF THE PHONE LINE YOU GAVE TO POLICE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. If you have a second line or another (Friends?) phone, use it instead. That way the police can get in touch with you when they need to.

Hey Everyone: Please, if you have kids or grandkids etc that you routinely take care of, please stop what you are doing and ask yourself: "What would I do if the child was kidnapped or missing?" How long would it take me to find a RECENT picture of them? How would I describe the child? How tall, how heavy, what hair and clothes, etc.

I encourage you to go to the NCMEC website at www.missingkids.com for information on this subject, and also to look at the pictures of children currently missing. Who knows, a missing child from 5 states away might be living next door to you! The NCMEC has reunited thousands of children with their families and is a great source of information.

We don't like to think about it, but NCMEC responded to 10,093 cases of child sex trafficking in 2017 alone... so as distasteful as it is to think about it, make sure your kids are educated. The NCMEC site has a wealth of useful information and materials on how to educate children on this and many other subjects.
